Our Initiatives: Programs

Professional Development & Mentorship

Get the Edge

NCWFS is working to create a mentorship program focusing on Career Development for all fire personnel that recruits experienced professionals from all ranks to run workshops and seminars for those looking to promote.  The purpose of this is to ensure that promotions are based on merit regardless of sex or any other factor.  Because less than 5% of paid professional firefighters nationwide are women, our organization focuses heavily on improving those numbers.

Youth Outreach

Early Exposure

First Alarm Girl's Fire Camp introduces young women in Grades 9-12 to the skills and craft of a career in the fire service in ways they wouldn’t necessarily experience elsewhere.  The goal with this initiative is to increase the number of confident, qualified female firefighter applicants and increase the visibility of women in the fire service, as well as educate young girls about the details of what it takes to be a professional firefighter. To that end, Camp is instructed almost entirely by female firefighters.

Our first camp was Oct 2018 hosted by Fremont FD and was a resounding success.  Our second camp was hosted by Santa Clara City FD in May 2019.  The next camp is anticipated for Fall 2019, so stay tuned!
